If we could move more retail managers into the passionate mindset, what a noticable difference customers would see.  More of them would be treated as they should be, after all we expect consumers to part with their hard earned and over taxed pounds, certainly they could expect a certain level of customer service in return, is this not how it should be?</p>
<p>Why is poor to insignificant customer service normal?  Would it not be simple and certainly more constructive to exceed customer service standards? Why do retail owner/managers tolerate the destruction of their company name and customer base?  Is it the employment process, is it because great people are hard to find?  This may be the case but it is not &#8216;mission impossible&#8217;.  Try these tips and expect to maintain a much improved level of customer service:</p>
<p>1.  When you take staff on, employ people who smile naturally and make eye contact.  Not to difficult this one.</p>
<p>2.  Another easy one, only hire people who are tidy and presentable, they take a pride in their appearance.  It      follows they will also take a pride in their place of work.</p>
<p>3.  Listen carefully during the interview &#8211; you only want people who speak clearly and can be understood.</p>
<p>4.  Take on people who are comfortable selling your company&#8217;s products and services.  When you are interviewing      them, hand them one of your products and ask them to sell it to you, or at least show enthusiasm in the product.</p>
<p>5.  Start training the new employee immediately, they need to be competent in your environment and understand      exactly what you want from them.  You will need to be clear on what you expect from your employee and be able      to train this in successfully, to meet the needs of your business.</p>
<p>If you can&#8217;t do this stop hiring now, give the task to someone else while you re-evaluate and examine your own &#8216;training needs.&#8217;</p>
<p>6.  Observe and listen to your new employee as they deal with your customers &#8211; you must do this.      Do not delegate this task.</p>
<p>7.  Remember to recognise and praise what has been done well.  Remember also to mentor and coach on      what was not done so well.</p>
<p>8.  Watch, listen and praise again straight away if you are happy they are looking after your customers correctly.      Keep this up for the remainder of their career with you, ensure you provide future training and development     opportunities.</p>
<p>9.  If your customers are not being looked after as they should be &#8211; you and the unsuitable employee will part      company.  If you don&#8217;t have a policy of zero tolerance for unacceptable performance criteria, put one in place      now, re-visit your probationary periods for new starters.  Don&#8217;t be upset when you have to fire someone.  Your      first duty is to protect your business, customers, and also your good and reliable employees, who will no longer      have to carry any non-performers either.</p>
<p>10. Follow through on any customers who have had to endure the bad experiences of dealing with the unacceptable       staff member.  Do everything possible to rectify this damage &#8211; this is important &#8211; you must do this.</p>
<p>Your hiring and review practices form the begining of recruiting and maintaining excellent staff.  To continue with excellent customer service you must retain excellent employees.</p>

<p>How does this relate to the story? I&#8217;ll get to that in a minute. Let me set the stage first.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve had a couple of very frustrating days trying to get some rather expensive software to work. So what&#8217;s new you ask? Isn&#8217;t technology supposed to be frustrating? <img src='http://selectarticles.info/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Okay, I&#8217;ve been in the tech game for a long time, so know that things are often not quite what they seem. Something touted as being easy, very often turns out to be a nightmare.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m setting up a complete membership system for a business partner. The package runs on the web and handles everything from taking orders to recurring charges, to backend and up-sells etc. In all, one of the best of breed packages out there (and the price reflects it).</p>
<p>So I followed the instructions and set it all up. Took a couple of goes &#8211; but who&#8217;s counting?</p>
<p>I then set up a test product and lo and behold, it spat the dummy.</p>
<p>The company runs a 24&#215;7x365 help desk. So I duly logged a ticket and the automatic reply said I should get a response within about 30 minutes or so.</p>
<p>Hours went by. A day went by. I did more testing, logged more information and still no response.</p>
<p>The company owner had stated in my welcome email (when I bought the package) that &#8220;support is my number one priority&#8221; and &#8220;I pay a fortune to have 24&#215;7x365 support and if I felt I wasn&#8217;t being supported, send an email to him personally.&#8221; </p>
<p>So I did &#8211; no response.</p>
<p>2 days went by and by now my blood was boiling.</p>
<p>Customer service? What customer service?</p>
<p>Another email was fired off &#8211; and now the response was, &#8220;We thought you&#8217;d solved the problem as you&#8217;d installed it successfully on another server&#8221;.</p>
<p>Assumptions galore!!!</p>
<p>Yes, I&#8217;d tested it, but the package was destined to be used for a particular application on a host owned by my business partner. I&#8217;d made all this clear to the support guys.</p>
<p>Then a bit of finger pointing. The issue was probably with my hosting provider &#8211; not them.</p>
<p>So I worked with my host &#8211; and no, the issue still existed. (And my host genuinely does provide 24&#215;7x365 support &#8211; and respond within 30 seconds &#8211; and I&#8217;ve used it &#8211; so if you&#8217;re looking for an excellent hosting provider, drop me a note.)</p>
<p>So finally 2.5 days later, the software vendor is looking at the issue. In the meantime, I&#8217;d wasted at least 5 hours working on it myself and am not a happy camper.</p>
<p>Sort of highlights the dangers of making assumptions, doesn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>My question to you is &#8220;Could this be happening in your business?&#8221;</p>
<p>Could your clients be waiting on stuff from you &#8211; stuff you believe you&#8217;ve delivered? Could there be simmering resentments &#8211; resentments that mean that as soon as your client can take the business somewhere else they will?</p>
<p>One of the best pieces of advice ever given to me was to &#8220;manage your customer&#8217;s expectations&#8221;. People really get upset when they feel they&#8217;re being ignored, lied to, or given the run-a-round.</p>
<p>In my experience, and I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll agree, when someone keeps you informed, explains the situation in ways that you can understand and empathise with, you generally give them another chance and be more understanding.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the biggest issues any business would face is its unique position in the market. If you&#8217;ve not got a unique position, then you&#8217;ll find that you&#8217;ve got nowhere to &#8220;stand out&#8221; of the crowd throughout your promotion.</p>
<p>USPs were originally defined around the 40s as a position a company took to make them stand out from their competitors and make the customers of said competitors switch to them. It works as an understandable and tangible reason for people to buy your product, over that of other competing products, or as a benefit that your competitors don&#8217;t offer.</p>
<p>For example, a bank in the UK can be promoting itself based on these propositions:</p>
<p>1) All call centers are in the UK-so no one is dealing with crackly lines, or broken English due to the call centers being based in a lower-cost area of the world.</p>
<p>2) It has no middlemen-which means there&#8217;s no commissions to pay to anyone.</p>
<p>3) It has no shareholders, so it does not charge money for things that should be free.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the USP for that bank and it has resulted in many people switching to it.</p>
<p>The USP is anything that makes you &#8216;different&#8217; from your peers. The only caveat to this is to make sure it&#8217;s a clear difference-anything unclear, or too technical may not work, or be completely overlooked by your customers, thereby creating no reason for them to switch to you or choose you over your competitors.</p>
<p>Your unique sales position is a clearly defined statement of what your business stands for-what makes it special apart from others, and is your key to monopolizing a stake in your customers&#8217; mind. If you have not thought of a USP before, why not think through all the departments of your business e.g. finance, accounting, human resources, sales and marketing, pre- and post-sales support etc. and discover if there&#8217;s anything outstanding enough to be worth telling your customers about it? Just don&#8217;t be shy about promoting it.</p>
<p>Say, your USP could be your customer service position, whether it has to do with your response time, or your guarantee. But if your rivals are also competing on response time, one strategy is to flesh out a true instance or circumstance as a case study for prospects to refer to. By this method you&#8217;re telling the story of how Mrs. Smith became very relieved that fast response time had saved her husband&#8217;s life and therefore became a high-profile testimony for the hospital. People love inspiring stories because they are what make incidents sound special and unique. This would be your USP angle.</p>
<p>Ultimately, having a USP is nothing more than a matter of positioning perspectives. How do you want your business to be viewed by your prospects compared to others? It certainly helps that each individual&#8217;s needs are already different. All you can do to the best of your abilities is to craft that position to match their needs, thereby gaining a competitive edge over other merchants/vendors. Thereafter, everything you do to reinforce the USP is to instill confidence in the prospects that your proposed solutions will work out. You will have to be fluid and flexible in your approach to reconcile with a wide range of different needs and yet align your corporate values with the common points shared by these needs in order to serve well and consistently in the business.</p>

11. Are the employees ready for the change? Are they participating in the decision of whether flextime should be implemented or not?<br />
12. Will employees be able to do their work independently with little or no supervision during the odd hours in early mornings or late evenings? Will some sort of supervision be required?<br />
13. Will team projects run properly with the new flexibility in work schedules? How will the team members communicate with each other?<br />
14. How independent is the work of each employee? Will delays of one employee cause problems to another employee? </p>
<p>How should the employee request the organization for a flextime schedule?<br />
As per Scott Reeves (2006, www.forbes.com), employees must keep in mind the below seven tips before pitching for a flextime schedule.<br />
1. Bases Covered: Make it clear to your employer that all operational requirements of the job will be covered. Your proposal won&#8217;t be approved if it means punching a hole in your duties and the company&#8217;s business.<br />
2. Improved Service: Tell your employer how improved morale will quickly translate into improved productivity and better customer service. Show how this means bigger profits.<br />
3. Employee Retention: Recruiting is a major expense for any employer. Make it clear how a flexible work schedule will reduce costs by making employees happier and reducing turnover.<br />
4. No Higher Costs: Run the figures so you can show your employer flex-time won&#8217;t increase the supervisory workload or operating costs. Draft a schedule that shows that all operations will be covered during business hours.<br />
5. Accountability: Your plan must show that flex-time won&#8217;t diminish the ability of the employer to assign responsibility and demand accountability from those participating in the program. Lines of responsibility can&#8217;t be blurred by flex-time or telecommuting.<br />
6. Put Guidelines In Writing: If your company doesn&#8217;t already have one, put together a handbook outlining the responsibilities of employees on a flex-time schedule. This benefits everyone by defining expectations and eliminating needless squabbles.<br />
7. Chain Of Command: All requests for flex-time should be made in writing. Establish guidelines for granting requests so it&#8217;s not based on the whim of a supervisor and applied unevenly. If there is an appeal procedure, nail down the who, what, where and when of such reconsiderations. Applying different standards to different employees will spark resentment and bitterness, undercutting the entire program.</p>

Whether you&#8217;re preparing to connect for the first time, or connecting in a new home, some preparation is necessary to ensure that you will be able to use dial-up. You may want to cover all these checkpoints before calling the ISP.</p>
<p>1. <b>Your phone line.</b> You must have an analog landline telephone service to have a dial-up connection-not just a phone jack, or a digital VoIP phone, or even a cable-provisioned phone. Dial-up modems will not connect if they do not detect an analog dial-tone. Your cell phone may have a dial-up modem that can be used with dial-up. Check with your phone provider if you are not sure of these details.</p>
<p>2. <b>Your dial-up modem.</b> Most computers have dial-up modems already included, but some computers are now available without dial-up modems. For your desktop computer, check your tower for a phone port (laptops would have a phone jack along the back or sides). It should look just like the phone jack in the wall and may be labeled with the picture of a phone jack or the word &#8220;line&#8221;. The dial-up modem phone port is not the same as the Ethernet port, which is slightly larger and used for broadband cables. If you don&#8217;t have the phone port, you don&#8217;t have a modem. You will have to buy an external modem, with you can usually find online or in a computer or department store.</p>
<p>3. <b>Your dial-up features.</b> You need to have call waiting on your phone service if you want to be notified of incoming calls while you are online. You also need a V.92 modem-the latest standard for dial-up modems. Caller ID is not necessary, but beneficial if you want to determine if it is worth disconnecting from the Internet to take the call. To check what type of modem you have on your computer, check the phone and modem options on your control panel, refer to the computer/modem manual, or check with a local technician. All new modems come with the V.92 features.</p>
<p>4. <b>Your access numbers.</b> Check with your potential ISP for an access number for your area. Ask for several numbers if they have them and call your phone company to verify that these numbers will not incur any charges on your phone bill. Even if you have unlimited long distance, you should try to obtain the nearest number possible to keep a better connection. Your long distance phone company may have a policy for using data transfer numbers excessively, so check with them anyway.</p>
<p>5. <b>Your total expenses.</b> There are variety of ISP&#8217;s available to choose from, so do a little research. Do they have contracts or hidden fees? What are the payment methods? What do the plans and prices cover, and do the prices change over time? While a cheap price is appealing, you don&#8217;t want to sacrifice quality.
