The Long And Illustrious History Of Drums

The concept of the drum goes way back in time. People used drums to produce sounds as far back in time as 6000 B.C. In these older groups, like the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayas, the drum was a big part of society and was played during festivals and other events and gatherings. Drums were discovered in many caves and caverns in these ancient areas by researchers in later times.

Many that it is the stock of the drum that produces the sound. But, in fact it is the stretched out fabric covering the top, sometimes referred to as the membrane, that produces the sound. The sound is made by hitting this top with a stick of some kind. When the drum is drummed on, the membrane vibrates and the sound is reverberated throughout the instrument. The Indians actually fashioned sticks to pound onto the instrument during rituals and special times.

In the nineteen hundreds, drums were to be further enhanced, and eventually, the drum set was born. A drum set includes: a tom-tom, cymbals, snare drums, and bass drums (one of which has a foot pedal to smash it with. Other procession instruments like bells, chimes, and wood blocks were incorporated with this collection to produce even more sounds to add to the overall melody of a song. These collections were introduced in the 1930’s and by the 1960,s, when rock took form, drum kits like those described above were a necessary component for these bands. You were left in the dust if you and your band did not have drums as apart of your arsenal of instruments.

Like many other types of media and sensory objects, drums became digitized for more enhancement. Digital instruments, such as keyboards, synthesizers, and drum machines provide the ability for someone to make their own drum sounds. These sounds put together with synthesizers were unique and not available to be heard from set of drums. Therefore, modern music employs these devices for such reasons.

Drums were not always used for music. In fact, people of other continents used to play them to send communications. A series of beats would signal a certain sentence or command that others in the tribe would understand. Drums further stood as a symbol of the spirits for American Indian folks and people all over the world. Most thought of the drum as a male and present them as an adolescent grows up.

The drum pumps out bass like instruments of no other kinds. Drums have been beat in many classes of music, for instance: rock and roll, jazz, bluegrass, classical music, and much more. Next time you attend a concert of any kind, look around the stage and you might see a drum or group of drums of any type. These instruments are great for percussion and bass; because of this, drums are adaptable to any music situation and can be included with any kind of music.
