Making Your Own Candles
People have been making candles for thousands of years, originally as a necessity to see in the dark. Candle making today is enjoyed as a hobby where anyone can express their creativeness.
The reasons for making candles vary from wanting to add a certain atmosphere to a room to getting enjoyment out of giving away your creations to family and friends. Today people are also enjoying the extra income that can be generated from the sale of their homemade candles.
It is an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience to be able to not only make candles and be able to sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of one of your own creations, but more so to be able to give them away as very unique gifts. These days there are many craft stores where you can get all the necessary tools and supplies that you will need to make your own candles. These craft stores will readily stock things such as molds, wicks, decorations, fragrance and even color to go with your wax for your homemade candles. There are lots of tools that you can find around the home to complete your candle making kit. Step one in making candles is to prepare the wax by melting it in a double boiler. This is done by simply placing a half filled pot of water, on the stove top and then placing a smaller pot containing the wax inside the larger pot. By using this method you will avoid the wax from burning. You will need to have your mold and wick ready before your wax has melted. Hold the wick in the centre of your mold and simply pour the melted wax into the mold. You will need to allow four to six hours to pass before you can remove your candle from the mold. To make it easier to remove the candle from the mold, some people will spray a little cooking spray in the mold before pouring the wax and some people will sit the entire mold in the freezer to speed up the cooling period and to help release the candle from the mold. Find what works for you.
You are only limited by your imagination when it comes to making candles at home, with all the different styles and shapes, not to add all the varying fragrances, decorations and colors that you can use. Latex rubber allows you to create molds out of practically any object around the home. If you do decide to make your own mold out of latex rubber, then make sure that you leave a lip around the base of the mold. Because latex is so flexible you will need to take a sturdy piece of cardboard and cut a hole in it, big enough for your mold to sit in but not to slip through, this is where the lip comes into play, as it will not allow the mold to slip through the hole in the cardboard. This lip will act as a support for your mold as you pour in the wax.
There are people that have turned their passion and skills in the hobby into a business that gives them an extra income stream, simply by selling candles. Because they are buying their supplies in bulk they are able to take advantage of deeper discounts.
All they do then is just put a little effort and imagination into the way they package their products and the end result is a unique gift.
