A cold sore is an effect of being infected by a virus called Herpes Simplex Virus. The virus was very likely contracted as a child by a family member or friend. (perhaps by giving you a kiss or drinking after you, thereby infecting you). It can be triggered by different things but very likely, you\’ll get them during an illness or stressful time when the immune system is compromised.
Here are the 4 ways to treat an outbreak when they occur. This will at least cut the time the cold sore lasts in half, and most likely it will get rid of it by the next day.
Keep the cold sore clean and dry–wash it once every 2-3 hours with a wash cloth, soap, and water. Use a new wash cloth each time.
Keep the infected area iced every couple of hours to reduce the cold sores itching and irritation. The icing weakens the virus.
Drain the virus-filled fluid from the cold sore if you have any. Getting rid of the excess fluid will speed up the process. Dab a tissue when draining to clean up excess pus. If you leave it in there, it will only make it worse.
Use witch hazel on a q-tip to dab on the infected area. It is a home remedy used to dry up the sore and kill the virus. This remedy really works and it highly recommended.
Take a sterilized needle and puncture the pus sac to get rid of the virus-filled fluid. It will only pro-long the virus.
