Kids Need more Nature

Body:

America celebrated the first Earth Day On April 22, 1970. It was a need celebration to bring to light how Polution was killing this world. Today, Earth Day is no longer celebrated nationally but is celebrated around the globe.

The earth is in better shape than those early days yet, there is a staggering divide between children and the outdoors. Richard Louv, child advocacy expert, directly blames the lack of nature in the lives on today\’s wired generation. He calls this phonomenon nature-deficit order and he links it to some of the most alarming trends for our kids. Including rises in obesity, attention disorders, and depression.

Louv\’s book Last Child in the Woods: has spurred a national dialogue among all involved with children. Educators, health professionals, parents, developers and conservationists see the validity of Nature Deficit Disorder. This book will change the way you think about the future of your children. His book highlights the need to get outside…we are hardwired to be in nature.

Teacher Judith Millar, from NJ, Over five years ago, began introducing nature in her school. Our courtyard now has several habitat areas, including a Bird Sanctuary, a Hummingbird/ Butterfly Garden, A Woodland Area with a pond, and even a Meadow. My classes oversee the care of this \”Outdoor Classroom\”, but now it\’s practically a full time job, making it difficult to find time for all my other subjects My students currently maintain the Bird Sanctuary. In addition, this spring they will be a major force in the clean up and replanting process. They always have energy and enthusiasm for anything to do with \”their garden\”.

Despite schools doing their best to get kids in nature , we as a nation have lost the ability to just send our kids out to play. Summer Camps are a great way to fill this void. A finds that today\’s parents overprotect their kids. Kids have stopped climbing trees, been told that they can\’t play tag or hide-and-seek Not to mention THE STTICK and how it will put out someone\’s eye.

Can technology be the blame for the decline in outdoor play? Adrian Voce says \”Children are not being allowed many of the freedoms that were taken for granted when we were children,\” \”They are not enjoying the opportunities to play outside that most people would have thought of as normal when they were growing up.\”

According to the Guardian, \”Voce argued that it was becoming a \’social norm\’ for younger children to be allowed out only when accompanied by an adult. \’Logistically that is very difficult for parents to manage because of the time pressures on normal family life,\’ he said. \’If you don\’t want your children to play out alone and you have not got the time to take them out then they will spend more time on the computer.\’

Many play providers see the benefits to children of taking risks. \”Risk-taking increases the resilience of children,\” said one. \”It helps them make judgments,\” said another. We as parents want to play it safe and we need to rethink their benefit of adventure in a child\’s life.

The research also lists examples of risky play that should be encouraged including fire-building, den-making, watersports, paintballing, boxing and climbing trees. Summer camp provides an excellent opportunity for children to get outside take risks and play, all while still while being supervised by concerned young adults…knowen as counselors.

5. How well has the contractor communicated with you since the first time you contacted him? Is he quick to respond to your questions and concerns?

Communication is very important to most quality professional contractors. This is another indication of the core values, by which he operates. During your project, you will definitely want good communication.

6. Does the contractor carry worker´s comp insurance? Check into this as many companies carry some form of liability insurance but this is not a replacement for worker´s compensation. A simple liability plan will not cover a worker should they be injured on the job.

Another consideration is how well the contractor has insured his crews against injury. Some contractors pay their crews under the table and there is no history that the can verify. They may not cover the crews in such cases. This can put you at considerable financial risk. This simply is another indication of the core values that govern the Marietta painting contractors performance. Contact his and ask these questions.

7. References are very important and you should follow up with checking them. Of course, the company will only give you their best references but even these can give you an idea of the quality, communication, neatness and overall opinion of their work. Remember however that each person has their personal opinion on what qualifies, as a quality job so do not make your decision based solely on references.

8. Stay away from the cutthroat type contractor. These guys are more concerned with volume and will turn out as many projects as they can chasing a profit. Quality takes a back seat to quantity and there are few if any values driving the company. More times than not you will suffer using this kind of contractor.

9. Be sure that your contractor is perfectly clear on there being a walk through with the head crew member and yourself to look for areas that need tidied up or repaired. This must take place before you write any checks for the project. This protects both you and the contractor from issues later.

This walk through insures that you are happy with the work and helps to minimize or eliminate warranty issues for the painting contractor, saving the company both time and money. This is the best approach for wrapping up a project and seasoned contractors who are concerned about are aware of this.

10. You may have already thought of the following items as they are a bit more obvious: well written and detailed warranty, how many crews do they have, can you verify business age, complaints that remain unsettled with the Bureau and a business license are all very important.

Always put quality first. Putting a time into qualifying your Marietta painting contractors will pay off handsomely. You will have fewer headaches during the project. You will have a better looking home with a paint job that last longer.

CHOICE You can pay the fine and the higher insurance rate; hire an expensive lawyer (and hope to win); OR you can check out THIS approach.
