First, a little about myself. I have been a firefighter/EMT for almost 20 years. My wife of 28+ years is an Elementary school P. E. teacher. We have 3 wonderful children, 2 girls & 1 boy (now grown) and we were recently given the news that we are soon to be Grandparents (April 26 ish 2010). My wife asked me what I want to be called? I told her I was leaning towards Master G or G-Daddy. She told me: “I think PeePaw would be nice!”. I agree, PeePaw would be nice.

OK, enough is enough, Let’s get started!

I have been a Dishnetwork customer since they pretty much started with the so-called “small dish technology”. As a matter of fact, at the time, (sometime in late ‘95 – early ‘96) I almost went with one of those mega – dishes that was cluttering up the neighbors yards. These dishes had a lot of moving parts as they literally had to be maneuvered to a particular satellite for the programming/channel you wanted to watch. They were very expensive to purchase and a pain to install. The maintenance after the fact was also regular and expensive.

After I decided on a small dish, I called around to find the best deal around. Remember, this is around ‘96 ish so there really was no deal to be had. If I wanted to play, I had to pay. Here’s what I paid “off the hip”to purchase the system and have 1 dish with 1 receiver installed : $500. Oh, and it gets better! I also had to pay, in advance, for a years worth of programming : $300. A total of over $800, and yes, there was tax on top of that. Now, believe me when I say I’m not sorry I had to pay that much for my first satellite system. I have always been one of those tech-geeks that relished the idea of being one of the first to obtain new stuff.

The great thing about the small dish system is that there are no moving parts. Once the dish is locked onto the signal, you’re set.

As I watched the installers do their thing, one thought stood out in my mind. This wasn’t rocket science. If they could do it – so could I. As neighbors, family and friends later decided they also wanted a system ( after seeing mine ), I helped them to install theirs to help save them the installation fee. This experience would later aid me in my next business venture as a small dish satellite installer. I will cover more of that story in another segment.

So, for the past 13 – 14 years, I have enjoyed my Dishnetwork system. There have been numerous receiver upgrades and multiple receivers added as the technology progressed. It has now come to the point where we have downsized to only 2 receivers in the house (I did have up to 6 at one time). There are only 3 of us in the house now (my boy is in his 2nd year of College on his way to becoming a Computer Science major).

I have decided to create this series of articles to share my experiences with Dishnetwork (good & bad). I will continue adding segments in the future.
