I´m a great fan of postcard marketing, but not a fan of myths that surrounds it. Fortunately some people have fallen victim to this myth that has misled so many.
I wish to spell out these myths and explain why they are wrong and unproductive. So what are the 2 myths?
Postcard Marketing Myth #1: Colour isn´t such a big deal when you are on a budget.
Now this one gets me bad. Some experts believe that colour isn´t much of a big deal when you are marketing on a tight budget. It´s easy to cut corners in such situation. Marketers think they could save money by going for black and white postcards.
The truth here is they aren´t saving money but losing money, and I´ll tell you why in this article. I´ll like to address this myth by asking a question. If you where given a choice between a coloured monitor screen computer and a black and white option which would you chose? Off course the coloured option.
Many people would go for the coloured option. Why? Well, biologically our eyes are designed to be attracted to coloured images. We find them more appealing and so they catch our attention faster. Scientist have established that we retain coloured images better and faster than black and white images.
So how does this apply to postcard marketing? First, since coloured images appeal better to the eyes naturally, you´ll want your postcards to appeal to your customer´s eyes and catch their attention fast.
Secondly, because we remember coloured images faster and better, you want your customers to remember your postcards down the road even when they are not prepared to buy now. They will buy in the future because your postcard made and left an impression they won´t forget.
Earlier on I said going black and white could lose you money. Yes it can. If I got a black and white postcard from a marketer, the impression I get is that he/she is cheap and probably the product isn´t quality. That would put me off buying.
On the other hand if you go coloured, you send a message that you are a professional and your product is of great value, so I´ll more likely buy.
Postcard Marketing Myth #2: Fill Postcard with As Much Info As Possible
Hmm, this is another big myth and mistake most amateurs make. The more we sell them the better the chance they´ll buy. WRONG.
There are two forces that drive people to respond to a postcard marketing campaign offer.
1. Curiosity
2. Feeling they will miss out on something.
I´ll like to talk a bit about curiosity. This is one thing you must understand and practice. Learning to feed prospects curiosity in your postcards will drive more response. When you fill your postcards with too much word´s you give too much information, and when you give too much information there isn´t any reason people will respond or check out your website or do anything cause you´ve just given it to them.
The key is to say less. In saying less you are giving more. If you understand your market well, you wouldn´t need too much information on your postcards.
In summary, use coloured postcards instead of black and white. Feed prospects curiosity by saying less and have more white space on your postcards.
When you do these two things, your chance of succeeding with postcard marketing will greatly improve.
